In addition to the well-known injections of corticosteroids into the knee, an injection of hyaluronic acid can also be considered. Hyaluronic acid is a product which occurs naturally in the human body. It is found in particular in joint tissue and synovial fluid. The body's own hyaluronic acid acts as a lubricant and shock absorber in the synovial fluid of a healthy joint, such as a knee joint. When the cartilage in the knee wears down ("osteoarthritis of the knee"), the effect of the knee's own hyaluron diminishes. An injection of hyaluronic acid can then be a solution. The aim of the injections of hyaluronic acid is to reduce the pain in your knee joint(s). The extent to which the pain is reduced, and how long the reduction lasts, varies from patient to patient. On average, 60-70% of patients benefit from these injections and the effect lasts for 6-12 months. The most commonly used injection is Ostenil Plus 20 mg/ml, the syringe contains 2 ml as standard and is available from pharmacies or online. Three injections are given at an interval of two weeks.
